GRHENA (Green heat generation hub at the Chemical Industrial Park of Tarragona) is a project developed by Iberdrola Clientes Sociedad Anonima, one of six Innovation Fund 2023 general-call projects to sign Grant Agreements with CINEA (the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency) on 22 July 2025. The project deploys electric boilers powered by renewable electricity to directly electrify industrial steam generation at the Tarragona chemical polygon, displacing natural gas combustion. It is positioned as the first large-scale demonstrator of this direct electrification pathway for industrial heat, with a design capacity of up to 648 GWh/year of steam output. The EUR 53,938,146 grant is non-dilutive EU funding disbursed against milestone delivery under the Innovation Fund's standard grant-agreement terms.
The six-project batch signed on 22 July 2025 (EUR 319 million combined) spans hydrogen, hydro/ocean energy, energy storage and refinery-decarbonisation technologies, of which GRHENA is the industrial-heat-electrification component.
demonstrator, GRHENA's technical and cost outcomes will inform whether direct electric-boiler retrofits become a template for decarbonising gas-intensive chemical clusters elsewhere in the EU.
non-dilutive EU Innovation Fund awards (alongside Project NOON hydrogen and offshore-wind EIB financing), reducing the equity cost of its Spanish decarbonisation pipeline.
