Market transmission case study — China's 2025-10-09 battery/graphite export controls (Announcement 58)
Second case for the per-event qualitative layer (2026-07-05). The mechanical directional study scored this the LARGEST producer−consumer spread of any China restriction (+16.2% t+20). The name-by-name tape confirms the alternatives thesis fired violently — and adds the discipline the first case (Ge/Ga/Sb) could not show: the scarcity-headline pop round-trips unless a hard catalyst lands. Research, not investment advice. Returns vs Oct-8-2025 close, Yahoo daily bars (SPY ~flat over the window, raw ≈ market-adjusted); channels news-verified.
Verdict
The alternatives exploded on day 1-4 exactly as the thesis predicts — then gave back 100-140% of the spike within three weeks, before the formal Nov-7 suspension even landed. The durable winners were the alternatives that converted the panic into a hard catalyst:
| # | expression | spike (peak) | Oct-31 | year-end | what separated it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Posco Future M (003670.KS) | +47% | held +47% | +27% | only large non-China anode maker AND landed a $470M US-automaker anode contract Oct-15 — panic → order book |
| 2 | WWR Westwater | +127% (Oct 14) | −10% | −51% | biggest torque (near-complete US anode plant) — a SELL-THE-SPIKE trade, not a position |
| 3 | NVX Novonix | +52% | −22% | −48% | confounded by its own first-commercial-sample news the same days |
| 4 | NMG Nouveau Monde | +42% | −16% | −31% | clean pure-play, two-session move |
| 5 | short CATL/BYD (HK) pair leg | — | −4/−8% | −13/−13% | controls tax China's own exporters; slow persistent bleed, no round-trip |
Special mention: Graphite One (GPH.V) +47% spike, round-tripped, then +44% by year-end on the Dec-18 EXIM $2.07B LOIs — the sequel-channel in miniature (the policy response, not the policy, paid).
The failed ex-ante pick — the thesis stress test
Syrah (SYR.AX) was the textbook screen pick — the only integrated ex-China natural-graphite-to-US-anode producer with an operating plant — and the WORST major performer: spike fully erased in 12 sessions, −3% by year-end. Mozambique operational risk + balance-sheet distress swamped the policy tailwind. Also failed: Talga (right asset, wrong geography — an EU project has no leverage to a US supply panic; −13% YE) and Magnis (screen says graphite-anode, reality says suspended shell). Company-quality and jurisdiction-match screens must run BEFORE the alternatives list ships — a distressed alternative is not an alternative.
Round-trip anatomy (why t+20 windows mislead here)
Peak Oct 13-15 → Trump's Oct-12 softening → Busan Trump-Xi (Oct-30) priced the truce → by Oct-31 WWR/NVX/NMG/SYR were at-or-below baseline. The formal Nov-7 suspension (Decision 70) was a non-event on the names — the tape trades the POLITICS, not the instrument. Korean names did not round-trip (contract-backed). Caveat for our own study: the +18.4% producer cohort at t+20 likely reflects cohort composition (Korean weighting) and window luck; the qualitative tape is the truth layer. Note ALB/SQM's Nov-Dec +54% is the lithium-carbonate rally, NOT this event — misattribution risk if a lithium-scoped cohort sweeps them in.
Rules added to the transmission-map template (Ch.6-8)
- Ch.6 — round-trip clock: scarcity-headline longs in de-escalation-prone
standoffs are 1-3 WEEK trades; the de-escalation headline (not the formal suspension) is the exit. Political trajectory > legal instrument.
- Ch.7 — hard-catalyst filter: the position-grade longs are alternatives
that can convert panic into contracts/financing within weeks (Posco's $470M, Graphite One's EXIM). Screen for: operating capacity, credible counterparty pipeline, government-finance eligibility.
- Ch.8 — quality gate: exclude distressed balance sheets (Syrah, Bushveld
pattern), geography-mismatched assets (Talga vs US panic), and dead shells (Magnis) BEFORE publishing an alternatives bench.
