DXY re-enters the threshold zone; the CMIC overlay adds a layer the USD read misses
One week after the June 18 entry called the EM accumulation gate open, DXY has moved from 100.28 to 101.58 with the trend flag still labeled rising. The stated restoration threshold was "below 102 across several sessions." That condition remains technically met, but the trajectory argues for holding pace rather than accelerating.
What I'm watching
- DXY 101.58, trend rising: 130 bps above the June 18 floor, 42 bps below the stated EM brake threshold. Direction is more informative than level right now.
- EWJ $92.61, 1m +1.64%, 52w-pos 84.6%, DD -4.5%: pulled back $1.84 from the June 18 52-week high. BoJ normalisation thesis intact. The Japan-UK economic security declaration (IPTM: 2026-06-14) adds a semiconductor and critical-mineral cooperation anchor -- structural, not a near-term price driver.
- EWZ $33.85, 1m -6.04%, DD -18.11%; EZA $62.18, 1m -5.6%, DD -22.13%: both continuing to weaken with DXY still below 102. The DXY gate frame is necessary but not sufficient to explain EM weakness here.
- DoD CMIC list (IPTM: 2026-06-08): CATL, BYD, Alibaba, Baidu, NIO added. Contracting ban June 30; supply-chain ban June 30, 2027.
What changed / what matters
DXY trajectory, not just level
The June 18 entry set a binary gate at 102. At 101.58 rising, a more accurate read is: gate open but narrowing. A 42 bp move -- plausible within a single week if the Fed maintains a hawkish pause -- closes it without any new central-bank action. The right posture is to hold current EM pace rather than add into the approach. EWJ's pullback from $94.45 to $92.61 is orderly and consistent with the DXY move; the June 18 "DCA pace, not concentrated add" call held. No dovish BoJ surprise has triggered the stated disconfirmation condition, and the Japan-UK economic security framework provides a second policy vector for Japan beyond the rate path.
The CMIC overlay adds a dimension DXY misses
The DoD 1260H CMIC expansion (effective June 30) puts CATL and BYD on the list alongside Alibaba, Baidu, and NIO. The direct channel is Chinese ADR exposure; the indirect channel is any EM manufacturer whose end-customers now face US procurement restrictions on Chinese-supply-chain batteries or components. On top of that, China MOFCOM Announcement No. 26 (IPTM: 2026-06-24, effective July 1) establishes enforcement reporting for strategic mineral export controls -- rare earth, gallium, germanium, antimony, graphite. China is tightening enforcement, not just adding names. This adds friction for EM electronics exporters sourcing Chinese intermediates.
Neither event is a single-session price catalyst. Together they reinforce concentrating EM exposure in names whose thesis does not depend on smooth China supply-chain access. EWJ and EWG over EWY, EWZ, or EZA.
EWZ and EZA: not a DXY story
BRL and ZAR are pricing idiosyncratic risk -- Brazilian fiscal trajectory and SA political premium -- not just USD strength. EZA also has indirect exposure through PGM and rare-earth commodity chains that the China enforcement tightening affects. The DXY gate opening was necessary but not sufficient for either.
Candidate picks within this theme
- EWJ (Japan) -- BoJ normalisation intact, Japan-UK policy anchor; DD -4.5% is a healthy pullback. Hold at current pace; do not add into DXY at 101.58 rising.
- EWG (Germany) -- EU Chips Act 2.0 structural story holds; 52w-pos 50.7%, -3.6% 1m. Medium conviction hold; no new add until 52w-pos recovers above 60%.
- EWU (UK) -- BoE cutting cycle limits upside vs. normalising BoJ. Hold only; lowest conviction in the DM bloc.
- EWZ / EZA -- excluded; weakness is idiosyncratic and the CMIC/mineral enforcement overlay adds a new headwind for EZA specifically.
What I'd revise if I saw
DXY retreating back below 100.5 within a week: the threshold-zone concern resolves and EM accumulation pace can resume. Current "hold, don't add" posture would be premature.
