DXY closes below the EWY gate; EWT gives back its equipment-led rally
One analyst's qualitative synthesis of the week. Not backtested alpha. Not trade advice.
What I'm watching
- DXY 100.857, trend flat - down from 101.35 on Jul 1 and 101.37 on Jun 27. This clears the "DXY below 101" concentrated-add threshold the Jul 1 tech-ai entry set for EWY.
- VIX 15.81 - down from 18.41 a week ago. Regime still reads "cautious" but the risk backdrop has eased materially.
- EWT $104.86, 1m -2.1%, 52w-pos 88.2%, DD -5.98% - down from 94.8% range and -2.62% DD on Jul 1. The equipment/foundry re-rating documented three days ago has partially reversed.
- INDA $49.56, 1m +3.19%, 52w-pos 39.9% - a third straight week of positive momentum since the DXY gate fired Jun 26, still deep in its own drawdown.
What changed / what matters
Three of this week's five scheduled daily entries did not publish (Tuesday commodities Jun 30, Thursday FX Jul 2, Friday demographics Jul 3). Flagging that gap rather than papering over it with invented commentary. What follows leans on Monday's reform-momentum entry, Wednesday's tech-ai entry, and today's price refresh, which only covers ACWI, SPY, INDA, EWJ, and EWT - the rest of last week's ten picks (EWN, EWY, EWA, EWG, EWW, ARGT, EWC) carry forward without a fresh read this week.
The headline move is DXY. Jun 27 through Jul 1 it held 101.3-101.4, rising. It has now dropped to 100.857, below the 101 threshold the Jul 1 entry set as the specific condition for moving EWY from DCA pace to a concentrated add - the first time that pre-stated condition has actually been met. One Saturday print is a proposal, not a trend; it wants one more session of confirmation before acting on it.
The tech chain's internal picture has flipped since Wednesday. EWN and EWT were the strongest legs in the panel on Jul 1 (97.8% and 94.8% of 52-week range). EWT alone is down to 88.2% range with drawdown widening to -5.98% - a real pullback, not noise. It happened in the same week DXY eased, which argues the move is chain-specific (input cost or booking related) rather than a broad macro drawdown.
Argentina's IMF fourth-tranche review, dated Jun 30 in Monday's entry, has no confirmed outcome in anything filed since - no IPTM record and no follow-up thinking entry. The ARGT thesis from Monday stands unconfirmed, not validated. Treat it as still open.
Candidate picks within this theme
- EWY (Korea) - the DXY gate condition set Jul 1 is now met; needs one more session to confirm before moving off DCA pace into a concentrated add.
- INDA (India) - third consecutive week of positive 1m return post-gate; 39.9% of range leaves the most room of any name in the panel.
- EWJ (Japan) - flat and unremarkable this week (1m +0.07%); given the reform and FX theses already in place, no reversal is itself the useful data point.
- EWT (Taiwan) - hold, do not add into the pullback; the Jul 1 thesis (N2 capacity commitments) is unchanged, but the reversal needs an explanation before sizing up again.
- ARGT (Argentina) - carryforward, unconfirmed; the IMF tranche outcome is not visible in anything filed or written since Monday.
What I'd revise if I saw
DXY back above 101 for two consecutive sessions would undo the EWY gate-fire read above and put it back to "proposal, not confirmed."
