Korea and Taiwan claw back half the crash, the stabilization read the Jul 29 entry asked for
One analyst's qualitative review. Not backtested alpha. Not trade advice.
What I'm watching
- EWY $171.14, 1m -9.86%, DD -21.93%: still deep in drawdown from the Jul 29 concentration shock (EWY had printed -21.37% 1m and $161.20 that day), but the price itself has recovered roughly 6% off that low.
- EWT $102.21, 1m -4.72%, DD -8.36%: also up from the $97.81 read on Jul 29, and back above the level ($99.84) that triggered the Jul 25 "accumulate again" call in the first place.
- EWJ $94.61, 1m -0.69%, DD -2.43% and EWN $69.07, 1m +0.36%, DD -2.5%: both essentially flat through the whole episode, exactly as expected for names outside the Samsung/SK Hynix concentration.
- China MOFCOM Announcement No. 30 (Jul 24, 2026) added an NL-domiciled entity (IHC Merwede) to its export-control list alongside 13 EU firms spanning defence, photonics and semiconductor-adjacent sectors, filed one day after the EU's 21st Russia sanctions package β a reminder that the NL leg of this thesis carries its own export-control tail risk even while ASML's guidance and pricing leverage stay strong.
- No fresh TSMC/ASML/SK Hynix capex, demand, or export-control news has landed since the Jul 29 entry's window (TSMC's raised $60-64bn 2026 capex guide and ASML's push for a 10% tool-price hike are both still the operative facts, unchanged).
What changed / what matters
The Jul 29 entry left two open items: whether EWT's pullback was contagion-only spillover that would fade, and whether EWY's crash would prove to be a financing-sentiment air pocket rather than a demand break. A week later, both point the same direction. EWT is back above its own Jul 25 trigger level with no independent bad news in between, consistent with the spillover read. EWY has recovered about a third of its drawdown even though the trailing-30-day return line still looks ugly, because the crash itself sits inside that 30-day window. Neither ASML nor TSMC has walked back guidance, and there is still no reporting of HBM order cuts or capex trims from SK Hynix, so the "record profit, worst stock drop in 20 years" divergence flagged last week has not resolved into a demand story. It has instead started to resolve toward the equity market re-pricing the financing-structure anxiety it overreacted to.
That is a tentative reaffirm, not a clean one. The unresolved ASML-TSMC price standoff signals margin pressure shifting through the supply chain even as top-line demand holds. And the Jul 24 MOFCOM action is a reminder that the NL leg, priced as the "safe" low-concentration name here, carries its own geopolitical tail: retaliatory dual-use export control rather than financing-sentiment risk, but a tail risk all the same.
Candidate picks within this theme
- EWT (Taiwan) β reinstate the accumulate-again call; price has recovered above the Jul 25 trigger with no company-specific bad news, consistent with the contagion-not-fundamentals read.
- EWJ (Japan) β hold top conviction; untouched by the whole episode, still the lowest-concentration-risk name in the panel.
- EWN (Netherlands) β hold, but note the new geopolitical tail: the Jul 24 MOFCOM entity listing named an NL dual-use exporter, adding a second risk channel beyond the ASML-TSMC pricing standoff.
- EWY (Korea) β still an avoid, not yet a buy-the-dip; the price bounce is real but the drawdown (-21.93%) is the deepest in the panel and the financing-sentiment question that caused it hasn't been independently confirmed as resolved, only unconfirmed as a demand break.
- INDA (India) β continue full pace; +1.3% 1m, unrelated to the chip-chain episode, structurally unchanged.
What I'd revise if I saw
EWT or EWY rolling back over toward their Jul 29 lows without a fresh news trigger would say this week's bounce was a dead-cat rally, not stabilization, and would undo the EWT reaffirm above.
