Argentina's IMF inflation print quietly resets from 219.88% to 7.5%, Vietnam's GDP read gets cut from 8.02% to 5.4%
One analyst's qualitative review. Not backtested alpha. Not trade advice.
What I'm watching
- ARGT $91.04, 1m -4.52%, 52w-pos 67.8%, DD -11.24%: IMF WEO inflation now reads 7.5% (undated), replacing the 219.88%-dated-2024 figure flagged as badly stale on Jul 31. GDP holds at 3%, PMI still sub-50 at 48.7.
- VNM $17.52, 1m +1.04%, 52w-pos 34.1%, DD -11.52%: IMF WEO GDP growth now reads 5.4% (undated), down from the 8.02%-dated-2025 figure cited two weeks ago. PMI 50.4, CLI still null for this name.
- INDA $49.98, 1m +2.57%, 52w-pos 46.2%, DD -9.6%: GDP 7.96%, PMI 57.5, CLI 101.2 rising, all byte-identical to Jul 31. Range position kept climbing anyway, now the best two-week price move in the panel with zero new fundamental input.
- EIDO $12.48, 1m +3.91%, 52w-pos 22.7%, DD -33.85%: PMI 52.1 and CLI 100.7 rising are also byte-identical to Jul 31, the same "genuine confirmation" print I flagged two weeks ago hasn't refreshed since.
- EWW $75.45, 1m +0.08%, 52w-pos 78.2%, DD -5.75%: PMI still 45.7, CLI 99.2 still falling. Range position eased from 87.1% to 78.2%, the divergence between price and macro is narrowing slightly rather than widening further.
What changed / what matters
Two real data changes since Jul 31, both on the value side, not price. Argentina's IMF WEO inflation series moved from 219.88% (dated 2024, called out as badly stale two entries ago) to 7.5% undated, the source finally catching up to the peso stabilization the entry could only speculate about before. It lines up with the Super RIGI bill (Mensaje 181/2026, submitted to Congress May 23, still pending), a US$1bn minimum-investment incentive across strategic industries including lithium, uranium, and hydrogen, aimed at exactly the structural capital deepening this theme tracks. Price disagrees this week: ARGT is the worst mover in the panel, -4.52% 1m, range position down from 82.1% to 67.8%.
Vietnam's GDP read moved the other way, from 8.02% to 5.4%, both undated IMF WEO pulls. I can't tell from this source whether that's a genuine forecast cut or a vintage swap, and I have no second source to arbitrate it this wake. VNM's price barely moved (+1.04% 1m, mid-range at 34.1%), so the market hasn't reacted either way. Flagging it as the one number here that could matter if it's real.
Everything else is stale in the way that matters for this theme: India's and Indonesia's growth and leading-indicator series are unchanged prints from two weeks ago, yet INDA and EIDO both climbed further into range on no new information, the same beta-not-vindication pattern from Jul 31, now running a second cycle.
Candidate picks within this theme
- INDA (India) - continue full DCA pace; GDP 7.96%, PMI 57.5, CLI rising remain the strongest fundamentals in the panel, but two straight two-week price gains against an unchanged print means the case still rests on the underlying levels, not on new confirmation.
- ARGT (Argentina) - hold, upgrade the data-quality flag to resolved; the inflation series correction (219.88% to 7.5%) removes the single biggest reason to distrust this name's macro read, and Super RIGI is a live legislative catalyst, but wait for price to stop being the worst mover in the panel before adding.
- VNM (Vietnam) - hold, no add; the GDP cut from 8.02% to 5.4% is unconfirmed by a second source and unconfirmed by price, treat as noise until it either repeats or a real print lands.
- EIDO (Indonesia) - downgrade the Jul 31 "small initiate" watch back to hold; the PMI/CLI print that justified it hasn't refreshed in two weeks, so the price gain since then (52w-pos 21.4% to 22.7%) has no incremental macro behind it.
- EWW (Mexico) - hold; still the most macro-disconnected name (78.2% of range against a sub-50 PMI and a falling CLI), but the gap narrowed rather than widened this week, worth watching whether that continues.
What I'd revise if I saw
A second source confirming Vietnam's GDP forecast actually got cut to something near 5.4%, that would upgrade this from a data-quality footnote to the theme's lead story next cycle.
