SK Hynix prices its Nasdaq listing into the chip selloff, TSMC earnings up next
One analyst's qualitative review. Not backtested alpha. Not trade advice.
What I'm watching
- EWY at $181.29, 1m -11.12%, DD -17.29%: the Korea chip selloff flagged in Monday's reform-momentum entry has not stabilized. This is now the deepest drawdown in the chain.
- SK Hynix's $29.65bn Nasdaq ADR listing (ticker SKHY): a July 6 revised filing cut the indicative offer price to KRW242,500 (~$158.26/ADR) from an earlier ~$165.26 expectation. Trading is set to begin as soon as Friday, July 10.
- EWT at $101.88, 1m -3.66%, 52w-pos 82.9% and EWN at $67.19, 1m -0.52%, 52w-pos 83.7%: both have given back most of the equipment/foundry gains flagged in the July 1 entry (EWT was 94.8%, EWN 97.8% then). EWJ is the steadiest, 1m -0.59%.
- TSMC's next earnings call, July 16: the next hard data point on whether AI capex commitments are holding.
What changed / what matters
Monday's entry described a Korea-specific shock: Samsung and SK Hynix lost ~$290bn combined on an AI-capex sustainability scare, KOSPI breaking 8,000. A week later the correction has widened, not resolved. EWT and EWN, the strongest names in the chain on July 1 (both re-approaching 52-week highs), have round-tripped most of that move. EWJ, the lowest-beta name in the panel, is essentially flat, arguing this is a chain-wide re-rating rather than a single-country event.
The most concrete data point this week is SK Hynix's own Nasdaq ADR pricing: the largest-ever US stock sale by a foreign issuer, with proceeds earmarked for fab construction and ASML EUV scanner purchases to expand HBM capacity. A book-building process that cuts its indicative price ~4% mid-week, in the same window EWY is down 11% on the month, reads as underwriters marking the offering to the correction rather than fighting it. Friday's open is a real-money test of whether the HBM-supercycle thesis holds at a discount.
Set against that, capex has not turned. ASML raised its annual revenue forecast citing capacity expansion from TSMC, Samsung, and SK Hynix. Samsung's 2026 capex plan is $73bn, up 22%. SK Hynix is raising $29.65bn to buy more EUV tools, not shore up a balance sheet. That is a genuine divergence: chain equities down 4-11% on the month while the three largest capex commitments in the industry are all still being sized up. Either the equity move is a sentiment air pocket ahead of confirmation, or capex gets walked back at TSMC's July 16 call.
MOFCOM Announcement 23 (June 22, targeting MP Materials and USA Rare Earth) sits adjacent to this chain, but the rare-earth proxy's -16.28% 30d / -5.02% 1d move is a reminder upstream materials are correcting broadly, not tightening. A real supply squeeze from entity-list enforcement would show up as a price spike, not a continued slide.
Candidate picks within this theme
- EWN (Netherlands) β mildest drawdown in the pack (-5.15% DD) and the only name with a positive fundamental catalyst this week (ASML's raised guidance); equipment backlog thesis least exposed to a single quarter's capex wobble.
- EWJ (Japan) β flattest 1m move, lowest DD (-4.02%); diversified equipment exposure (TEL, Disco, Advantest) without single-name HBM/foundry concentration.
- EWT (Taiwan) β correction is shallower than Korea's (-3.66% 1m vs -11.12%) but the TSMC July 16 call is the gating event before adding; foundry-capacity commitments are the least likely of the three capex stories to reverse.
- EWY (Korea) β avoid until the SKHY debut trades Friday; the ADR pricing is the cleanest available signal on whether this is sentiment or fundamentals.
- INDA β unaffected by this week's chip-chain noise, DXY-gated thesis unchanged from the July 6 note.
What I'd revise if I saw
TSMC's July 16 guidance shows capex intentions softening alongside the equity move, or SKHY opens and holds below its cut $158.26 indicative price through the first week of trading. Either would argue the correction is repricing real demand, not just clearing a crowded trade.
