DXY's sub-101 print goes multi-session, but the EM beneficiaries split on old fault lines
One analyst's qualitative review. Not backtested alpha. Not trade advice.
What I'm watching
- DXY 100.911, trend flat: the third read in a row at or below 101, following 100.857 (Jul 4) and a flat 101.0 (Jul 6). The Jul 1 tech-ai entry set "DXY below 101" as the specific condition for moving EWY off DCA pace; Jul 4 called it a proposal wanting "one more session of confirmation." That confirmation has now arrived, several sessions over.
- EWJ $92.54, 1m +2.56%, 1y +32.55%, 52w-pos 84.3%: still the strongest name in the DM panel, unmoved from its high-80s range position over the past two weeks.
- EWZ $34.41, DD -16.76%; EZA $62.69, DD -21.49%: both still carrying the deepest drawdowns in the fx-policy panel despite the improving dollar backdrop, unchanged from the Jun 25 read.
- VIX 16.55: regime holds "cautious," not risk-off, so the weak-dollar signal isn't being swamped by a broader flight-to-safety move.
What changed / what matters
The mechanical part of this story is closed out: the DXY-below-101 gate the Jul 1 entry proposed for EWY, and Jul 4's Saturday synthesis flagged as fired-but-unconfirmed, has now held for multiple sessions (100.857, then 101.0, then 100.911). Under the letter of that rule, EWY would be a concentrated add today. It isn't, because the Jul 6 entry overrode the gate on a separate axis: Samsung and SK Hynix's ~$290bn AI-capex air pocket has nothing to do with the dollar and everything to do with chip-sector fundamentals, and nothing in the past three sessions has stabilized that complex. The lesson generalizes past Korea: a confirmed FX tailwind is necessary but not sufficient, and the panel needs to be read name by name.
Applying that discipline to the rest of the fx-policy panel, the split is the same one flagged Jun 25. EWJ and EWU sit at 84%+ of their 52-week range with positive 1m and 1y returns, the clean beneficiaries of a soft dollar plus their own structural stories (BoJ normalization for Japan; for the UK, a political-discount unwind still being absorbed). EWG has improved since Jun 25, from 50.7% to 62.6% of range, though a flat +0.07% 1m keeps it the DM laggard. EWZ and EZA have not moved: -16.76% and -21.49% drawdown, functionally unchanged from two weeks ago even as DXY eased from 101.58 to below 101. South Africa's unemployment sits at 32.4% and Brazil's May CPI came in at 4.72%, domestic-fragility numbers a friendlier dollar does nothing to fix. The Jun 25 call that BRL and ZAR price idiosyncratic risk, not USD strength, holds up under three more weeks of data. A genuinely dollar-driven EM rally would show catch-up in these names by now; it hasn't.
Candidate picks within this theme
- EWJ (Japan) β 84.3% of 52-week range, +2.56% 1m; clean multi-session dollar tailwind plus an intact BoJ normalization thesis. Highest conviction in the panel.
- EWU (UK) β 84.5% range, +1.67% 1m; benefits from the same DXY move as EWJ with no offsetting idiosyncratic drag this week.
- EWG (Germany) β 62.6% range, up from 50.7% on Jun 25; hold and watch, the recovery is real but still lagging the other two DM names.
- EWZ (Brazil) β avoid for now; DXY tailwind present but May CPI at 4.72% and a -2.93% current account keep the drawdown wide.
- EZA (South Africa) β avoid; weakest in the panel at 44.3% range and -21.49% drawdown, with 32.4% unemployment underlining why a soft dollar alone hasn't moved this name.
What I'd revise if I saw
EWZ or EZA re-rating in step with DXY over the next one to two weeks with no change in their domestic fundamentals: that would mean the FX channel has started to dominate over the idiosyncratic risk I'm currently weighting heavier, and the "avoid" calls above would need to flip to "hold."
