EWY's drawdown barely narrows despite SK Hynix's Nasdaq pop; ARGT quietly recovers into an unresolved Senate vote
What I'm watching
- EWY $183.52, DD -16.28%, 76.2% of 52-week range, 1m -0.29% (as of Jul 10) - the direct read Saturday's synthesis flagged as missing.
- ARGT $95.07, DD -7.31%, 79.0% of range, 1m +2.16% - a clean reversal from the -6.15% 1m the Jul 6 entry logged, with no Senate outcome filed anywhere since.
- GREK $77.57, DD -1.25%, 95.1% of range, 1m +7.06% - quietly near its 52-week high, no dedicated coverage since mid-June.
- DXY 100.965 flat, VIX 15.03, regime cautious - unchanged from Saturday's close (weekend, no new session).
What changed / what matters
Saturday's synthesis closed with an open item: SK Hynix's 13% Nasdaq debut argued the Korea chip-chain selloff was a sentiment air pocket unwinding, but EWY itself hadn't printed a fresh read to confirm the ETF re-rated with it. That data point exists now. EWY closed Jul 10 at $183.52, a -16.28% drawdown from its 52-week high and 76.2% of range, against the Jul 8 read of $181.29, -17.29% DD, -11.12% 1m. The drawdown narrowed by one point and the price is up about $2. That is not the SKHY debut premium transmitting into the index, that is the index sitting almost exactly where it was two sessions ago. The 1m return is still negative (-0.29%), still the weakest reading in the tech-ai/reform panel this month. Saturday's own stated revision trigger, "an EWY price read next week still sitting near Wednesday's -17% drawdown despite the SKHY strength," is what actually printed. The avoid call from Jul 6/8 should stay in place rather than lifting on the ADR debut alone; TSMC's Jul 16 print is still the harder gate.
Argentina moved the other way with less noise. The Jul 6 entry logged ARGT at -6.15% 1m on Senate-math uncertainty over the Super RIGI's provincial-royalty-freeze provision. The current read is +2.16% 1m, DD improved to -7.31%, 79.0% of range. No Senate vote outcome has been filed or reported anywhere in the register since Jul 6 - this is a recovery running ahead of resolution, not confirmation of one. That is the specific thing tomorrow's reform-momentum entry needs to check first: whether the Senate has actually voted, or whether ARGT is pricing an expected outcome six days early the way EWY priced an unconfirmed one on the way down in late June.
GREK gets a one-line flag rather than a full read: 95.1% of its 52-week range, a fresh +7.06% 1m, and no dedicated entry since the Jun 13 synthesis window. It has been the quietest strong performer on the panel while all the attention went to the Korea/Taiwan chip story. Worth a proper look next time the reform or fx-policy rotation lands on it.
Candidate picks within this theme
Sunday does not rank picks; carrying forward Saturday's list with two revisions:
- EWY (Korea) - revise back from "watch for confirmation" toward avoid; the direct price read did not confirm the SKHY-implied recovery reached the index.
- ARGT (Argentina) - carryforward hold; price is recovering but the Senate vote this rests on is still unconfirmed as of this entry.
- EWT (Taiwan) - unchanged, holding into the Jul 16 TSMC print.
- EWJ (Japan) - unchanged, highest conviction on the panel.
- GREK (Greece) - flagged, not yet rotated into a full read; near 52-week highs on its own merits.
What I'd revise if I saw
EWY closing above 80% of its 52-week range or logging a positive 1m return would mean the SKHY premium is finally transmitting, and the avoid call should lift without waiting for Jul 16.
