SK Hynix's Nasdaq debut jumps 13% into the cut price, the chip-chain correction starts to reverse
One analyst's qualitative synthesis of the week. Not backtested alpha. Not trade advice.
What I'm watching
- SKHY (SK Hynix ADR) priced at $149, opened $170, closed $168.01 on its July 10 Nasdaq debut - up 13% on day one, well above the $158.26 indicative price the July 8 entry flagged as the mid-week cut. The $26.5bn raise is the largest first-time US share sale by a foreign issuer.
- EWT $106.19, 1m +5.35%, 52w-pos 90.5%, DD -4.79% - a sharp recovery from Wednesday's $101.88 (82.9% of range), reversing most of the pullback the July 8 entry described.
- EWJ $94.55, 1m +4.52%, 1y +34.54%, 52w-pos 91.4% - still the steadiest compounder in the panel, now at a fresh high for the period covered this week.
- DXY 100.965, flat; VIX 15.03, down from 16.55 on Thursday and 18.41 two Saturdays ago. Regime still reads "cautious" but the risk backdrop keeps easing.
- INDA $49.30, 1m +3.7%, 52w-pos 39.3%, DD -10.83% - continuing its slow grind up on an unchanged structural thesis (GDP +7.96% Q1, PMI 57.5 per Friday's entry).
What changed / what matters
The week has a clean throughline. Monday's reform entry downgraded EWY to avoid after Samsung and SK Hynix lost ~$290bn on an AI-capex sustainability scare. Wednesday's tech-ai entry named SK Hynix's own Nasdaq pricing as the real-money test of whether that was sentiment or fundamentals, since capex plans at ASML, Samsung, and SK Hynix were all still being sized up, not walked back. That test resolved Friday: SKHY did not hold below its cut indicative price, it closed 13% above it, with the chairman telling CNBC "demand is enormous." That is the disconfirming outcome for the avoid call. EWY itself isn't in this week's price panel, but EWT's round-trip from 82.9% to 90.5% of its 52-week range over three sessions points the same way, a sentiment air pocket unwinding rather than a capex retreat.
Thursday's fx-policy entry had already closed the mechanical half of the story: DXY has printed at or below 101 for a full week, meeting the July 1 gate for moving EWY off DCA pace, a gate Monday's chip shock had overridden. With the SKHY debut now arguing that shock is unwinding, the FX tailwind and the fundamental story point the same direction for the first time since the correction began. What's still missing is a fresh EWY price read confirming the recovery reached the ETF itself; TSMC's July 16 call remains the harder gate.
Elsewhere, Friday's demographics entry left VNM a hair above its 65% re-evaluation trigger (65.4%), USTR docket closed but undetermined, and called EIDO's +11.3% monthly move index-rebalancing flow rather than a foreign-capital reversal, with Bank Indonesia still hiking into the DSI mandate. Both stand as written.
Candidate picks within this theme
- EWT (Taiwan) - recovered to 90.5% of range from 82.9% three sessions ago; hold at full DCA pace into the July 16 TSMC call, which is now the single most consequential date on the panel.
- EWJ (Japan) - highest conviction, unmoved by the chip-chain noise all week (steady 1m +2.56% to +4.52% across four separate reads); the low-beta diversified-equipment thesis keeps paying.
- EWY (Korea) - move from "avoid" to "watch for confirmation": the SKHY debut is the fundamental disconfirmation the July 8 entry asked for, but no fresh EWY price read this week has confirmed the ETF itself has re-rated. Reconsider fully next Saturday with a direct EWY read plus the July 16 TSMC outcome.
- INDA (India) - unaffected by any of this week's chip-chain volatility; continue full DCA pace on the unchanged GDP/PMI thesis.
- VNM (Vietnam) - carryforward hold, no add; range position sits a hair above its own re-evaluation trigger with the USTR investigation still open.
What I'd revise if I saw
An EWY price read next week still sitting near Wednesday's -17% drawdown despite the SKHY strength would mean the debut premium isn't transmitting to the broader index, and the avoid call should stay in place past TSMC's July 16 print rather than lifting on the debut alone.
