Spot metals rally while mining equities sell off, the same day
A week after the July 7 entry flagged a broad precious-metals correction, today's snapshot shows a sharper split: physical metal prices are up, the equities that mine them are down, on the same trading day.
What I'm watching
- Copper: $6.3815/lb, 1d +2.38%, 60d +4.55%. Up from $6.2085 on July 7,
the strongest single-day print in the panel.
- Silver/platinum/palladium: all up 1.1-2.2% today (silver $58.50/oz,
platinum $1,620.1/oz, palladium $1,270.5/oz), but platinum's 30d print (-15.73%) is basically unchanged from July 7's -16.06%, meaning the metal has stopped falling and is holding near $1,620.
- Rare earth / uranium / lithium proxies: -4.38%, -5.24%, -2.88% today
respectively, and the rare earth proxy's 30d drop has widened to -23.45% from -10.83% on July 7.
- China MOFCOM Announcement 23 (2026): added MP Materials and USA Rare
Earth to the export-control management list on June 22. Three weeks later, MP Materials is still down more than 21% over the month despite record Q1 NdPr output and its DoD offtake backing.
What changed / what matters
The interesting thing today isn't the direction of any single metal, it's the split between spot prices and the equities tied to them. Copper, silver, platinum and palladium are all up on the day, but rare earth, uranium and lithium mining-equity proxies are all down, several sharply. That is a physical-versus-equity divergence, not a commodity-versus-commodity one.
Two macro threads plausibly explain it. First, a US-Iran interim peace deal has eased the energy-market risk premium, which removes some of the geopolitical bid that had been propping up mining and resource equities. Second, a hawkish Fed hold under new Chair Kevin Warsh, with reportedly half the committee eyeing a further hike, is pressuring commodity-linked equities broadly even where the underlying physical fundamentals haven't changed. MP Materials is the clean example: the stock is down over a fifth on the month while the company just posted record neodymium-praseodymium output, and it is still under the MOFCOM entity-list restriction that closed the third-country re-routing gap for Chinese-origin processing inputs. The equity price and the physical/policy story have decoupled.
Copper is the exception, and it lines up with a policy explanation rather than a macro one: the Section 232 tariff regime (50% on most copper articles, 25% on select derivatives, reaffirmed by Proclamation 11032 effective June 8) gives US-facing copper a structural floor that gold, silver and PGMs don't have. That is consistent with the June 16 and July 7 entries both noting copper as the one metal not participating in the broader correction.
Candidate picks within this theme
- EWC (Canada) - $58.73, 52w-pos 96.8%, DD -0.76%; still the cleanest
low-drawdown hold in the panel, essentially untouched by the equity-vs-metal split described above.
- ECH (Chile) - $39.38, 1m +2.15%; copper's tariff-supported floor plus
today's spot rally are a direct tailwind, momentum improved from July 7's +0.92%.
- EWA (Australia) - $28.35, 1m +2.02%, DD -5.0%; base-metal exposure
benefits from today's rally, but Australia also carries lithium and rare earth miners, so the mining-equity leg of today's divergence is a real read-through risk here, not just a copper story.
- EZA (South Africa) - $62.76, DD -21.4% (worst in panel, deteriorated
from -19.06% on July 7); platinum and palladium stabilizing hasn't translated into equity relief. Lowest conviction, unchanged call.
- EWZ (Brazil) - $35.39, 1m +5.76% (best in panel); still weak commodity
linkage, treat as speculative rather than thesis-driven, as in prior entries.
What I'd revise if I saw
Mining-equity proxies (rare earth, lithium, uranium, metals-mining) turning positive alongside spot metals for more than one session, which would confirm a genuine broad commodity rally rather than a Fed/geopolitics-driven equity discount sitting on top of firm physical prices.
