TSMC's earnings call is tomorrow, Korea bounces off Black Monday but the trailing scars are still the deepest in the panel
One analyst's qualitative review. Not backtested alpha. Not trade advice.
What I'm watching
- TSMC's Q2 earnings call, July 16, is tomorrow. The July 8 entry flagged this as the gating event on whether AI-capex commitments (ASML's raised guidance, Samsung's $73bn 2026 plan, SK Hynix's $29.65bn EUV-funding raise) hold or get walked back.
- EWY $176.98, 1m -11.04%, DD -19.26%: price has recovered 5.3% from Monday's Black Monday close of $168.02, but the trailing 1-month and drawdown figures are still the worst in the panel, worse than Monday's own read (-8.45% 1m that day).
- EWJ $93.89, 1m +2.41%, DD -3.18% and INDA $48.73, 1m +1.97%: both back in positive territory two sessions after Monday's panel-wide flip negative, arguing that move was Korea-specific spillover, not a durable contagion.
- EWT $101.88, 1m -0.56%, DD -8.65%: essentially flat on the month, holding up better than Korea heading into TSMC's print.
- The node registry added TSMC Fab 18 (Tainan) as a named facility today: an 8-phase, >58,000 sqm 3nm-class gigafab, TSMC overall cited at 90%+ of the world's most advanced logic-chip output. A concrete reminder of how concentrated the EWT thesis actually is in physical terms.
- MOFCOM Announcement 27, filed to the IPTM register today (originally issued June 29): adds 20 Japanese entities, including Mitsubishi Electric and MHI subsidiaries, to China's dual-use export-control list. Different companies from EWJ's equipment names (TEL, Disco, Advantest), but the same country and the same control mechanism used against MP Materials/USA Rare Earth in June's Announcement 23.
What changed / what matters
Monday's entry left two open questions: was EWY's crash a single-day capitulation or a deepening trend, and was the panel-wide reversal that day (INDA, GREK, ARGT, EWJ all flipping negative alongside Korea) contagion or coincidence. Two sessions later, both are starting to answer. EWY has bounced 5.3% off Monday's close, the first positive data point since the crash, though the 1-month and drawdown metrics still carry the full damage and remain the worst in the group, consistent with a sharp air pocket now stabilizing rather than a clean "held for two sessions" confirmation. EWJ and INDA are both back to positive 1-month moves, arguing Monday's reversal was Korea-specific spillover through regional flows, not a genuine cross-country break.
TSMC's call tomorrow is the harder test. The chain's bull case (equipment backlog, EUV capacity build, HBM demand) and bear case (a sentiment air pocket becoming a real demand write-down) both get resolved by one print. Today's facilities-registry entry on Fab 18 is a useful sizing check going in: EWT's thesis rests on a small number of physical sites doing a disproportionate share of world leading-edge output, exactly the concentration that lets one earnings call move a whole country ETF.
Candidate picks within this theme
- EWJ (Japan) β best 1m (+2.41%) and lowest DD (-3.18%) in the panel; MOFCOM Announcement 27 targets Japanese entities, not this ETF's equipment names, worth flagging but not yet a downgrade.
- EWT (Taiwan) β flat on the month (-0.56%); TSMC's July 16 call is the gating event before any add, Fab 18's concentration cuts both ways on a good or bad print.
- EWY (Korea) β hold the avoid call one more session; a 5.3% bounce off Monday's low is a real first data point but not yet the "held for two sessions" bar Monday set.
- EWN (Netherlands) β -2.31% 1m, ASML thesis intact, no fresh catalyst; secondary to TSMC's print since ASML guidance already updated July 1-8.
- INDA β back to +1.97% 1m, DXY-gated thesis unchanged, unaffected by chip-chain noise for a second straight read.
What I'd revise if I saw
TSMC's guidance tomorrow softens on AI-capex alongside EWY failing to hold above today's $176.98, which would argue Monday's crash was the start of a fundamental repricing rather than a sentiment air pocket clearing.
