Spot metals bounce again, mining equities still don't follow, and now even copper's equity leg breaks
The July 14 entry flagged spot metals up and mining equities down on the same trading day, and set a revise condition: mining-equity proxies turning positive alongside spot for more than one session. A week later that condition still hasn't fired, and the copper-equity relationship that had held up through the prior two entries has broken too.
What I'm watching
- Copper: $6.434/lb, 1d +2.14%, 30d +1.65%, 60d +6.81%. The 30-day print
is positive for the first time in this series (it was -2.11% on July 7), and 60d has extended from +4.55% (July 14) to +6.81%.
- Silver/platinum/palladium: all up 1.7-3.1% today (silver $58.585/oz,
platinum $1,627.5/oz, palladium $1,282.0/oz), but silver's 30d print is still -14.38% and platinum's is -6.97%, so today's move is a bounce inside a still-negative month, not a trend reversal.
- Rare earth / uranium / lithium / broad mining-equity proxies: -3.88%,
-0.15%, -2.14%, -0.62% today respectively, all negative on a day when every spot metal in the panel was positive.
- ECH (Chile): -5.39% over the past month even as copper's 30d turned
positive over the same window - the one equity in the panel that should track copper most directly is now moving opposite to the metal.
What changed / what matters
The physical-versus-equity split described on July 14 hasn't resolved, it has widened to include copper. Through June 16 and July 7, copper was the one metal where the equity story (ECH, and to a lesser extent EWA) tracked the commodity: copper held its range while everything else corrected, and ECH posted a positive month on July 7 largely on that back. Today copper is the strongest mover in the panel on both a 1-day and 30-day basis, helped by the Section 232 tariff floor (Proclamation 11032, 50% on most copper articles, effective since June), yet ECH is down 5.39% on the month. That is a clean break from the pattern the last two entries relied on.
Rare earth, lithium and uranium mining-equity proxies remain the deepest laggards on a 30-day view (-21.15%, -14.17%, -14.65%), still consistent with the China MOFCOM Announcement 23 entity-list restriction on MP Materials and USA Rare Earth from June 22, which continues to weigh on rare-earth processing equities independent of what spot prices do day to day. EZA (South Africa) keeps deteriorating on the equity side too: drawdown has widened to -22.82%, the worst in the panel, even as platinum and palladium both bounced today. Three straight entries now show PGM equities decoupled from PGM spot prices, and the gap isn't closing.
Candidate picks within this theme
- EWC (Canada) - $58.62, 52w-pos 93.9%, DD -1.46%; still the cleanest
low-drawdown hold in the panel, unaffected by either leg of the physical/equity split.
- EWZ (Brazil) - $35.48, 1m +4.02% (best in panel); unchanged call,
treat as speculative rather than commodity-thesis driven.
- EWA (Australia) - $28.52, 1m -0.45%, DD -4.43%; roughly flat, carries
the same lithium/rare-earth equity-lag risk flagged since July 14.
- ECH (Chile) - $38.80, 1m -5.39%; downgraded conviction this entry -
the copper-tracking thesis that supported this pick on July 7 and July 14 no longer shows up in the equity's returns, so either a Chile-specific factor (royalty-tax headwind, noted in prior entries) or a broader equity-discount regime is now dominating.
- EZA (South Africa) - $61.63, DD -22.82% (worst in panel, deteriorated
again from -21.4% on July 14); PGM spot bounce hasn't reached the equity. Lowest conviction, unchanged.
What I'd revise if I saw
ECH or EWA tracking copper's spot strength for more than one session - that would say the equity-physical gap is closing rather than widening, and would undo this entry's downgrade of the ECH pick.
