INDA and VNM close last week's price gap without a macro print, EIDO is the one move macro actually confirms
One analyst's qualitative review. Not backtested alpha. Not trade advice.
What I'm watching
- INDA $49.70, 1m +0.63%, 52w-pos 43.4%, DD -10.11%: range position jumped from 22.4% to 43.4% in a week. GDP (7.96%, 2026-Q1), PMI (57.5) and CLI (101.2, rising) are the identical figures from Jul 24 and Jul 17.
- VNM $17.37, 1m -5.96%, 1y +9.47%, 52w-pos 37.4%, DD -12.27%: range position rose from 20.2% to 37.4%. GDP (8.02%, still dated 2025) and PMI (50.4) are also unchanged.
- EIDO $12.37, 1m +9.37%, 52w-pos 21.4%, DD -34.43%: PMI holds at 52.1 (expansion), and CLI now reads 100.7, rising, a data point that wasn't in last week's read.
- EWW $77.11, 52w-pos 87.1% and ARGT $96.15, 52w-pos 82.1%: both climbed further into the top of their range against PMI prints still under 50 (45.7 and 48.7), and Mexico's CLI (99.2) is falling, not flat.
What changed / what matters
The Jul 24 entry set a specific test: INDA's price had fallen eleven range-points against unmoved fundamentals, and I said only a fresh OECD/World Bank print for India or Vietnam would resolve whether that gap was catching up to something real. That print never came, GDP, PMI, and CLI for both countries are byte-for-byte what they were a week ago, and yet the price gap closed anyway, sharply. INDA's range position moved 22.4% to 43.4%, VNM's 20.2% to 37.4%. That's not confirmation of the demographic-dividend thesis, it's the market re-rating without new information to re-rate on.
The tell is that this wasn't an India/Vietnam-specific move. EWW and ARGT also climbed further into their range this week, against PMI readings that stayed sub-50 and, for Mexico, a CLI that's now falling. Five names in the panel, all up in range terms, spanning strong fundamentals (India) and weak ones (Mexico) alike, is the signature of a broad EM risk-on week, not a demographic story discriminating on labour-force quality. The one name with an actual incremental macro confirmation is EIDO: PMI held in expansion at 52.1 and CLI printed 100.7, rising, a genuinely new leading-indicator data point layered on top of last week's first non-mechanical positive return. That makes Indonesia the only candidate this week where price and macro moved together for a reason I can name.
Candidate picks within this theme
- INDA (India) - continue full DCA pace on fundamentals (GDP 7.96%, PMI 57.5, CLI rising), but treat this week's range recovery as beta, not vindication, since none of the underlying series moved.
- EIDO (Indonesia) - upgrade watch to small initiate; CLI turning rising alongside a PMI already in expansion is the first two-indicator macro confirmation in this name since it entered the series.
- VNM (Vietnam) - hold the existing small initiate, no add; range position is still below the 47.8% level that triggered it, and the recovery rode the same broad move as everything else, not a resolved Section 301 case.
- EWW (Mexico) - hold; 87.1% of range against a 45.7 PMI and a falling CLI is now the widest valuation-momentum divergence in the panel.
- ARGT (Argentina) - hold; 82.1% of range against a sub-50 PMI, plus a standing data-quality flag, the inflation series on file still reads 219.88% dated 2024, badly stale for an economy several sources describe as fast-disinflating under current policy.
What I'd revise if I saw
EIDO's PMI or CLI reversing next print while its price keeps climbing, that would mean even the one name with macro confirmation this week was riding the same undifferentiated risk-on wave as the rest of the panel.
