EWJ's revise condition quietly fires, and the daily rotation skipped three straight days last week
One analyst's qualitative review. Not backtested alpha. Not trade advice.
What I'm watching
- EWJ $92.39, 1m -0.71%, DD -4.72%, 52w-pos 82.6%: up from $89.35 / DD -7.86% / 52w-pos 71.1% on the Jul 30 read. The Jul 30 entry's explicit revise trigger, "drawdown narrowing back under -5%," has fired.
- EWT $96.55, 1m -8.65%, DD -13.43%, 52w-pos 73.3%: worse than the $97.81 / DD -12.3% read on Jul 29, no stabilization yet for the Jul 25 "accumulate again" call that Jul 29 paused.
- No thinking entry exists for Jul 26, Jul 27, or Jul 28. The daily rotation (Sun/Mon/Tue) went dark for three straight days last week, resuming only with Wednesday's tech-ai entry on Jul 29.
- No Saturday synthesis ran on Aug 1, the second consecutive miss after Jul 18.
docs/picks/LATEST.mdis still dated 2026-05-02 (week 2026-18), now 13 weeks stale. - DXY 99.803, trend rising, VIX 15.99: regime holds "cautious," VIX still well off the Jul 20 reading (18.47) that accompanied the Korea-driven panel wobble.
What changed / what matters
The most substantive item this week is one that arrived quietly: the Jul 30 fx-policy entry wrote a specific, falsifiable revise condition for EWJ, drawdown narrowing back under -5% while Japan's chip-equipment names stayed under pressure would mean the DXY-pass-through story was wrong. That condition has now been met without any single dramatic print behind it. EWJ's DD moved from -7.86% to -4.72% and 52w-pos climbed from 71.1% to 82.6% in three sessions, while DXY itself sits lower than the Jul 30 read (99.803 vs 100.974), not higher. That is consistent with the Jul 30 entry's own alternative explanation, that the drag was Korea-chip-cycle contagion rather than dollar-driven, and that contagion is now fading for Japan specifically even as it has not faded for Taiwan. EWT's DD deepened again this week (-12.3% to -13.43%), the opposite direction from EWJ. Thursday's fx-policy entry should open by reconciling this split rather than re-deriving it from scratch.
The second item is structural, not market-moving, but belongs in a catch-up entry by design. The daily rotation is supposed to produce one entry a day; last week it produced entries only on Wed/Thu/Fri (Jul 29-31), skipping Sunday catch-up, Monday reform-momentum, and Tuesday commodities entirely. That is a bigger gap than the single-Saturday misses flagged in the Jul 19 and prior catch-up entries. Combined with a second missed Saturday synthesis (Aug 1) and a picks list frozen since early May, the weekly synthesis mechanism has now gone more than a full quarter without producing a fresh ranked list even though the daily entries have kept accumulating usable reads underneath it. This entry doesn't have the mandate to backfill three missing days or write a synthesis, but the gap should be visible to whoever reviews the series next.
On the register side, Argentina's Super RIGI bill has had no update since the Jun 24 media sanción (lower-house approval, 130-106-7); the amendment log at docs/iptm/actions/2026-05-26-argentina-super-rigi-nuevas-industrias.md still shows no Senate floor date. Monday's reform-momentum entry should check for a floor vote before repeating the "still waiting" line a fourth time.
Candidate picks within this theme
Sunday does not rank picks; carrying the week forward with two revisions:
- EWJ (Japan) - upgrade from avoid back toward hold; the Jul 30 revise condition fired (DD under -5%), and DXY did not do the work, supporting the chip-contagion read over the dollar read.
- EWT (Taiwan) - hold the Jul 29 pause on "accumulate again"; DD deepened further this week, still no stabilization.
- EWY (Korea) - hold the deepened avoid from Jul 29; no update this week, still the driver of the regional contagion story.
- INDA (India) - continue full pace; unaffected by any of this week's items.
- ARGT (Argentina) - hold; Super RIGI Senate math unresolved for a sixth week running.
What I'd revise if I saw
EWJ's drawdown widening back past -6% next week would mean this week's narrowing was noise inside a three-session window, not a genuine decoupling from the Korea-chip contagion story.
