Taiwan's PMI confirms the equity firming, Korea's manufacturing survey still says contraction
One analyst's qualitative review. Not backtested alpha. Not trade advice.
What I'm watching
- EWT $103.94, 1m +2.02%, DD -6.81%: continued to firm from the Aug 5 read ($102.21, DD -8.36%). Taiwan manufacturing PMI is 51.1, in expansion.
- EWY $167.24, 1m -0.46%, DD -23.7%: price actually slipped from $171.14 to $167.24 over the week even though the trailing-1m return improved (the worst days are rolling out of the window). Drawdown deepened, not narrowed. Korea PMI is 46.3, still contractionary, despite a "rising" trend label.
- EWJ $96.28 (+1.8% w/w) and EWN $69.43 (+0.5% w/w): both continue to drift up, unremarkable, consistent with their role as the low-concentration-risk names in this panel.
- rare-earth-proxy -13.31% 30d, -20.56% 60d: the sharpest move in the minerals snapshot this week, a chip-adjacent input cost easing rather than tightening.
- No new TSMC/ASML/SK Hynix-specific news or export-control action since the Aug 5 entry. I checked the IPTM action index for the Jul 25-Aug 12 window: eight new actions total, none semis-specific (closest are China MOFCOM No. 34 on drone-related dual-use exports, Aug 5, and the Jul 20 US EO 14415 on defense supply chains, both adjacent but not on-chain for this panel).
What changed / what matters
The Aug 5 entry called EWT's bounce contagion-not-fundamentals and left EWY as "not yet a buy-the-dip." A week on, the hard data lines up with that split rather than against it. Taiwan's PMI at 51.1 gives the equity firming an actual macro anchor: expansion territory, not just a technical bounce off a crash low. Korea's PMI at 46.3 is the opposite signal. The label says "rising," so the direction of travel is right, but the level itself is still deep in contraction, and EWY's price kept slipping through the week even as the trailing-return math flattered it. That's the tell: the 1m return column looks better only because the worst days of the late-July crash are aging out of the 30-day window, not because anything has actually turned. The drawdown column, which doesn't have that artifact, got worse.
The bigger structural point from last week, that neither ASML nor TSMC has walked back capex or pricing guidance and no HBM order cuts have surfaced from SK Hynix, still holds. Nothing this week changed that. This is now two weeks running with no incremental chip-chain news at all, which itself is informative: the "record profit, worst stock drop in 20 years" divergence in Korea has not resolved via headlines, it is resolving purely through price and macro drift. The rare-earth-proxy's 60-day decline is worth flagging as a quiet tailwind on input costs for the whole downstream electronics chain, though it belongs more to Tuesday's theme than today's.
Candidate picks within this theme
- EWT (Taiwan), upgrade conviction slightly; PMI expansion now backs the price recovery, closing the gap between "spillover faded" and "fundamentals confirm."
- EWJ (Japan), hold top conviction; still the cleanest low-concentration name, PMI 48.5 and CLI 100.3 rising is a soft-but-improving backdrop.
- EWN (Netherlands), hold; the ASML-TSMC pricing standoff and the Jul 24 MOFCOM entity-listing tail risk are both unresolved and unchanged.
- EWY (Korea), stay an avoid; PMI still under 50 and drawdown deepening this week is a harder signal than last week's "unconfirmed as a demand break," this is starting to look like the demand-side data catching down to the crash rather than the equity catching up to intact fundamentals.
- INDA (India), continue full pace; PMI 57.5 and GDP growth near 8% are structurally unconnected to the chip-chain episode and remain the strongest macro print in this panel.
What I'd revise if I saw
Korea's PMI crossing back above 50 while EWY stays this depressed would flag a mispriced opportunity and reverse the avoid call. Taiwan's PMI rolling back under 50 within the next print would undercut this week's upgrade.
