Silver reverses hard, and ECH finally catches the EWA bid
The Aug 4 entry set a revise condition: ECH catching a bid alongside EWA and copper for more than one session. A week later, ECH has moved, but the read is muddier than a clean confirmation.
What I'm watching
- Silver: $65.11/oz, 1d +0.01%, 30d +9.47%, 60d -15.62%. A week ago
this was $59.32, 30d -9.47%, 60d -25.57%. The 30-day figure has flipped sign entirely and the price is up ~9.8% over the week.
- ECH (Chile): 1m +1.67%, DD -12.36%, versus 1m -0.15%, DD -15.66% on
Aug 4. Drawdown healed by more than 3 points.
- EWA (Australia): 1m +5.62%, DD -1.18%, still the strongest print in
the panel, barely changed from Aug 4's 1m +5.92%, DD -1.68%.
- Copper: $6.6465/lb, 1d +0.79%, 30d +7.33%, 60d +6.32%. The 30-day
read accelerated from +3.98% a week ago; the 60-day cooled slightly from +7.87%.
- Rare-earth proxy: 30d -9.18%, a sharp improvement from -30.96% on
Aug 4, though still the weakest metal complex in the panel.
What changed / what matters
ECH did move in the direction the revise condition asked for: drawdown healed from -15.66% to -12.36% and the one-month return turned positive. But I only have two data points a week apart, not a session-by-session read, so I can't confirm this held "for more than one session" as the condition specified, only that direction is consistent. I'll treat this as a partial fire, not a full reversal of the Aug 4 downgrade, and want one more read before upgrading ECH back to EWA's level.
The bigger move this week is silver, not copper. A 30-day return flipping from -9.47% to +9.47% in a week is a large swing for the panel's deepest laggard on Aug 4. Nothing in the IPTM feed explains it directly, no new silver-specific export control or tariff action has posted since the last entry, so this reads as a macro/precious-metals bid (DXY still rising at 99.87, VIX low at 15.4, so not a pure safe-haven flight) rather than a supply-discipline story. I'd want it to hold outside a single-week window before treating it as signal for any pick in this panel.
On the supply-discipline side, the most concrete new fact is the Aug 6 US BIS DPAS directive requiring 100% domestic-sale allocation of black mass (lithium-ion battery scrap) and tungsten scrap starting Aug 27, the first US DPA action to target the recycling/secondary-materials stage rather than primary mining. That's consistent with the lithium proxy's continued weakness (30d -3.32%, 60d -13.67%) β a US-only scrap lock-in doesn't help non-US lithium supply chains, and if anything signals the US sees domestic secondary supply as tight enough to ration.
Brazil (EWZ) gave back its whole Aug 4 gain: 1m was +7.23% a week ago, now -2.06%, with drawdown worsening from -11.34% to -14.87%. That confirms the Aug 4 caveat that EWZ's move looked speculative rather than commodity- thesis driven β it didn't hold.
Candidate picks within this theme
- EWA (Australia) β hold top rank: still the healthiest drawdown and
best 1m in the panel, unchanged conviction from Aug 4.
- ECH (Chile) β upgrade from hold to watch-for-confirm: DD healed and
1m turned positive alongside copper's 30d acceleration, but I want a second consecutive read before calling the equity-physical gap closed.
- EWC (Canada) β steady, still the cleanest low-drawdown hold in the
panel (1y +31.68%, DD 0.0%).
- EZA (South Africa) β improved: DD healed to -12.67% from -20.33%,
1m +9.26% is now the second-best print in the panel, worth a closer look next PGM-heavy read given palladium 30d +15.21%.
- EWZ (Brazil) β downgrade: this week confirmed the Aug 4 caveat, the
bounce didn't hold and drawdown worsened.
What I'd revise if I saw
A second consecutive session of ECH gaining alongside copper and EWA, which would confirm the equity-physical gap is closing broadly rather than being a one-week noise read; conversely, ECH giving back this week's gain the way EWZ just did would say I read noise as signal.
