Mexico's CLI jumps to 103 while EWW sits flat, and Vietnam's improving 1-month return is a rolling-window illusion
One analyst's qualitative review. Not backtested alpha. Not trade advice.
What I'm watching
- EWW $75.50, 1m -1.58%, 52w-pos 78.2%, DD -5.69%: CLI jumped from 99.2 (falling, cited Aug 14 and Jul 31) to 103.02. PMI unchanged at 45.7, sub-50. Price and range position are essentially frozen versus Aug 14.
- VNM $17.15, 1m +4.07%, 52w-pos 23.4%, DD -13.38%: price fell from $17.52 to $17.15 this week, yet the trailing 1-month return improved from +1.04% to +4.07% and drawdown deepened.
- EIDO $12.50, 1m -1.34%, 52w-pos 23.0%: CLI reversed from 100.7 rising (Aug 14) to 99.67, price essentially flat.
- INDA $49.55, 1m +1.58%, 52w-pos 41.8%, DD -10.38%: pulled back from $49.98/46.2% on unchanged fundamentals (GDP 7.96%, PMI 57.5, CLI 101.25).
- Argentina Super RIGI: per Parlamentario (Aug 19), the Senate plenary still has no dictamen despite MendoVoz (Aug 19) framing it as entering its "recta final." Aug 26 self-imposed floor-vote target is 5 days out.
What changed / what matters
The lead story is Mexico, and it's the mirror image of the EWY case flagged Aug 16. There, price moved 7.5% with the PMI frozen at 46.3, and the read was that the market stopped waiting for fundamental confirmation. Here it's reversed: Mexico's CLI jumped from 99.2, falling, to 103.02, the single biggest one-week move of any indicator in this panel across the last month, and EWW's price didn't react at all, 52-week position held at 78.2% to the decimal versus Aug 14. A CLI print above 100 and rising is normally read as above-trend growth momentum building; a flat PMI at 45.7 says the survey data hasn't caught up. I can't rule out a vintage revision rather than a genuine month-over-month jump from a single read, so this goes on watch, not into the pick list, until it either repeats or the PMI confirms.
Vietnam is the same base-effect artifact the Aug 16 entry used on Korea, just running in the other direction. VNM's price actually fell 2.1% this week, and drawdown widened from -11.52% to -13.38%, real weakening. But the 1-month return improved because a worse day rolled out of the trailing window. Read the 1m number as a rolling-window quirk, not confirmation that Aug 14's IMF GDP-cut concern has resolved.
Indonesia's CLI gave back the one thing that justified the Jul 31 "genuinely confirmed move" call: it's back under 100 and falling again, price essentially unchanged. India broke its three-cycle pattern of price gains against flat fundamentals, this time pulling back instead, still on an unchanged, strong macro base.
Candidate picks within this theme
- INDA (India) - continue full pace; the pullback is noise against still-strongest-in-panel fundamentals (GDP 7.96%, PMI 57.5, CLI rising).
- EWW (Mexico) - upgrade watch priority, no add yet; the CLI breakout is the most interesting single print in the panel this month, but PMI hasn't confirmed and price hasn't moved.
- ARGT (Argentina) - hold, watch priority stays raised; the Aug 26 dictamen target is at real risk of slipping per Aug 19 reporting.
- VNM (Vietnam) - hold; treat the improved 1m return as base-effect noise, not a reversal of the GDP-cut concern.
- EIDO (Indonesia) - hold at downgrade; the CLI support for the Jul 31 upgrade case is gone.
What I'd revise if I saw
Mexico's CLI printing above 100 again next read, ideally alongside a PMI move off 45.7, would convert the watch into an actual add case. A Senate dictamen on Super RIGI landing before Aug 26 would resolve the Argentina timeline question either way.
