Four of five weekday entries didn't run this week, so the price tape has to do the talking: LatAm and Vietnam broke out Friday while Taiwan and Japan slid
One analyst's qualitative synthesis of the week. Not backtested alpha. Not trade advice.
What I'm watching
- Only one weekday entry ran this week (Friday's demographics piece). Monday through Thursday are blank in
docs/thinking/for Aug 17-20, and the last Saturday synthesis before this one was 2026-07-25, four weeks back, not last week. - EWW (Mexico) $77.38, up 3.2% from $75.01 (Aug 14), DD narrowing -8.9% to -3.34%, landing one day after Friday's entry flagged Mexico's CLI breakout to 103.0 with price "essentially frozen."
- EWZ (Brazil) $35.06, up 3.3% from $33.93, on a Brazil PMI (50.1) back above the expansion line.
- VNM (Vietnam) $17.87, up 4.1% from $17.16, all of it landing in a single Aug 21 session after five flat-to-down days.
- EWT (Taiwan) $104.30 / EWJ (Japan) $95.18, down 2.6% and 3.1% on the week, with no Wednesday or Thursday entry running to catch either move.
- EWY (Korea) $178.34, round-tripped $179.74 to $185.10 (Aug 17) to $170.05 (Aug 18) back to $178.34 (Aug 21), net -0.8% despite an 8% intraweek swing.
What changed / what matters
The honest headline is a process gap, not a market call: four of five weekday slots produced nothing, so the usual cross-theme corroboration doesn't exist this week. Rather than pad around that, I pulled raw weekly closes from .cache/dca/etf_daily_closes.parquet and .cache/raw-country-data.json directly, and there's a real rotation even without the commentary: Mexico, Brazil, and Vietnam each gained 3-4%, all front-loaded into a single Friday (Aug 21) session, while Taiwan and Japan each lost 2-3% with nothing on record explaining why.
Mexico is the cleanest thread. Friday's demographics entry caught the CLI jump to 103.0 with price frozen, and held it as a watch item pending either a repeat print or PMI confirmation, since a one-month CLI jump can just be a vintage revision. The next session, EWW moved 2.5% in a day, drawdown cutting from -5.69% to -3.34%. PMI is still stuck at 45.7, so this isn't the confirmation the entry asked for, but it's the first price move consistent with the CLI thesis rather than against it. One day isn't a trend; it earns a small upgrade, not a full add.
Brazil's move tracks BR's PMI crossing back above 50 (50.1), reversing the "crack paused, not healed" read from Aug 16. Vietnam mirrors Friday's own caution, which called VNM's improving 1-month return a rolling-window artifact over a still-falling price; within a day the price itself jumped 4.2%, turning noise into something worth a second look. Korea is the counter-example for why single-day moves need care: EWY spiked 3%, crashed 8%, then recovered, netting out flat, arguing last week's "market stopped waiting for the PMI" read was standing on noisy footing.
Candidate picks within this theme
- INDA (India) β hold, full pace; quietest series in the panel (-0.3%), still resting on the strongest fundamentals (GDP 7.96%, PMI 57.5).
- EWW (Mexico) β upgrade watch to small add; Friday's CLI-breakout thesis got its first same-week price confirmation, though PMI (45.7) hasn't moved and one session isn't a trend.
- EWZ (Brazil) β upgrade hold-avoid to hold; PMI back above 50 plus a 3.3% weekly gain reverses the "crack paused" call, needs a second week to confirm further.
- EWT (Taiwan) β add caution; down 2.6% with no tech-ai entry to explain it, the second time this month the theme's absence let a real move go unflagged.
- EWY (Korea) β hold avoid; the violent round trip nets to flat, evidence the "decoupling" story from two weeks ago was noise, not confirmation.
What I'd revise if I saw
EWW's CLI-and-price move both extending into a second week, or the Mexico PMI finally lifting off 45.7, converts the small add into full conviction. EWZ's Friday gain reversing next week alongside BR PMI dropping back under 50 would restore the "crack, not healed" read in full. A Wednesday tech-ai entry actually running and finding a fundamental reason for EWT's decline would change the caution into an outright avoid.
