ECH confirms the Aug 11 upgrade, and EZA takes the panel lead on a contracting PMI
One analyst's qualitative review. Not backtested alpha. Not trade advice.
What I'm watching
- EZA (South Africa): 1m +16.8%, DD -10.67%, now the strongest print in the panel, up from 1m +9.26% on Aug 11.
- ECH (Chile): 1m +9.48%, DD -9.36%, versus 1m +1.67%, DD -12.36% on Aug 11. The revise condition from that entry fires.
- Silver: 68.02 USD/oz, 30d +19.09%, the largest 30-day move anywhere in the materials panel, up from 30d +9.47% on Aug 11.
- Platinum: 1861.3 USD/oz, 30d +14.09%. Palladium decelerated to 30d +4.82% from the +15.21% cited two weeks ago.
- US BIS DPAS directive (black mass/tungsten scrap domestic-sale allocation) takes effect Aug 27, two days out.
What changed / what matters
No commodities entry ran between Aug 11 and today, so this is a two-week read rather than a weekly one. The Aug 11 revise condition on ECH was explicit: a second consecutive gain alongside copper and EWA would confirm the equity-physical gap closing, a reversal would say I read noise as signal. Two weeks later ECH's drawdown healed further, from -12.36% to -9.36%, and the one-month return moved from a marginal +1.67% to +9.48%. I still only have two data points, not a session-by-session series, so I can't certify this held every day in between, but the direction over the full window confirms rather than reverses. I'm upgrading ECH from watch-for-confirm to hold-with-conviction.
EZA has gone further and is now the standalone best print in the panel: 1m +16.8%, drawdown healed to -10.67% from -12.67%. But South Africa's own macro tape does not support this as a fundamentals story. The Aug 18 country snapshot has ZA's PMI at 45.8 and no trend reading, the policy rate cycle marked "hiking" at 7%, and CAPE at 9.5, a cheap 15th percentile. Chile shows the same pattern on its own numbers: PMI 44.7 and falling, GDP growth near flat at 0.21% for Q1. Both of this panel's best-performing equities sit on contracting domestic activity. The move is coming from platinum (30d +14.09%) and the broader PGM/silver bid, not from South African or Chilean growth. That is consistent with the read I've carried since Aug 4: metals price momentum is doing the work, equities are following, and a PMI that keeps contracting while the ETF keeps running is the setup that eventually snaps back the way EWZ did in July.
Silver's acceleration is the standout in the materials data: 30d +19.09%, up from +9.47% two weeks ago, with the 60-day drawdown also healing from -15.62% to -9.32%. DXY sits flat at 99.07 and VIX is still low at 15.74, so this reads as a broad precious-metals bid rather than a safe-haven flight, the same conclusion as Aug 11, just a stronger version of it. Lithium proxy flipped to 30d +7.61% from -3.32%, worth watching against Thursday's DPAS domestic-allocation deadline on battery scrap, since a US-only lock-in should show up as a relative laggard versus the rest of the metals complex if it's actually binding, not as a broad-based gain.
Candidate picks within this theme
- EZA (South Africa) - new panel leader; move looks commodity-driven, not macro-driven, given PMI 45.8 and a hiking rate cycle. Highest conviction on price, lowest on fundamentals.
- ECH (Chile) - upgrade to hold-with-conviction; the Aug 11 revise condition fired over the two-week window, though PMI 44.7 and falling is the same caveat as EZA.
- EWC (Canada) - steady; still the cleanest low-drawdown hold at DD -0.38%.
- EWA (Australia) - hold; ceded the top spot but 1m +4.67%, DD -1.15% is still healthy and stable.
- EWZ (Brazil) - hold downgrade; DD -14.92% confirms the July bounce never held, no change in view.
What I'd revise if I saw
EZA or ECH giving back this run the way EWZ did in July, which would confirm the PMI divergence was the real signal and the price move was noise; or South Africa's PMI turning back above 50, which would mean the equity move has fundamentals catching up to it rather than running ahead.
