TSMC beats and raises, EWT sells off anyway, and last week's Saturday synthesis never got written
What I'm watching
- TSMC's July 16 print: Q2 revenue $40.2bn (high end of guidance), gross margin 67.7% (beat), full-year 2026 revenue growth raised to "slightly above 40%" from "above 30%," and capex lifted to $60-64bn from $52-56bn on what CEO C.C. Wei called AI demand where "the gap is very big" between supply and unconstrained demand.
- EWT $97.33, 1m -6.22%, DD -12.73%, 52w-pos 74.7%: down from $101.88 / -0.56% 1m / -8.65% DD on the Jul 15 read, taken two sessions before the print. The ETF sold off through a beat-and-raise.
- Taiwan CAPE at the 94th percentile (
/api/country/TW), GDP 2.1%, PMI 51.1, against a 1-year ETF return of +72.6%. The value pillar score is 3.4/100, the cheapest possible read, next to a momentum score of 100. - No Saturday synthesis was filed on Jul 18.
docs/thinking/runs straight from Friday's demographics entry (Jul 17) to this one;docs/picks/hasn't updated since May 2. This is the gap this catch-up entry exists to flag.
What changed / what matters
The Jul 15 entry set up TSMC's call as "the harder test" for the whole tech-ai panel, with a bull case (equipment backlog, EUV capacity, HBM demand) and a bear case (a sentiment air pocket becoming a real demand write-down). Neither happened. TSMC beat on revenue and margin, raised full-year growth guidance by 10 points, and raised capex by nearly $10bn, citing agentic AI reviving CPU demand on top of the existing accelerator buildout. That is about as clean a bull-case confirmation as a single print can deliver. EWT fell anyway, down 4.5% in price terms from the Jul 15 read to $97.33, with the 1-month return flipping from roughly flat to -6.22%.
The read that fits is valuation, not fundamentals. Taiwan's CAPE sits at the 94th percentile against a trailing year of +72.6%, the kind of setup where a raised capex number gets read as a margin/free-cash-flow risk (heavier depreciation ahead) rather than pure confirmation of demand, even when the demand story itself is intact. A beat-and-raise into an already-stretched multiple is a classic setup for "sell the news," and that is what the price action shows. This does not undo the demand thesis. It does mean EWT stays a hold-what-you-have name rather than an add at these levels; the panel should wait for the multiple to work off some of the +72.6% run before treating a pullback as a buying trigger.
The second item is more of an ops note than a market one. Saturday's synthesis is supposed to reconcile the week's five daily entries into a ranked pick list every week; it did not run on Jul 18, and docs/picks/ has been stale since early May regardless. Carrying forward without a synthesis: INDA continues full pace (unchanged fundamentals two weeks running), VNM is a small initiate off Friday's trigger, EWJ and EWU stay the highest-conviction soft-dollar names from Thursday, EWZ is a hold upgrade on the Brazil rate-cutting divergence, EIDO and EZA stay avoids. Tomorrow's reform-momentum entry should also check whether Argentina's Senate vote on the Super RIGI royalty-freeze provision has actually happened; as of Jul 17 it still had not been reported anywhere in the register.
Candidate picks within this theme
Sunday does not rank picks; carrying forward the week's reads with one revision:
- EWT (Taiwan): hold, don't chase; TSMC beat and raised, but the ETF sold off from an already 94th-percentile CAPE, a valuation reaction, not a demand one.
- INDA (India): continue full pace; unchanged fundamentals for a third straight read.
- VNM (Vietnam): small initiate carried from Friday; Section 301 investigation still open.
- EWJ (Japan): highest-conviction soft-dollar name, unchanged.
- EWZ (Brazil): hold, carried from Thursday's rate-cycle divergence read.
What I'd revise if I saw
EWT stabilizing or re-rating higher within the next week without any further capex or margin news would mean this was noise around the print, not a valuation-driven repricing, and the hold-don't-chase call should lift.
